How did you begin your journey into actuarial science?
I've always really enjoyed math.  In school, I entered math competitions and created computer programs for fun. At Wilfrid Laurier University, I came across an actuarial co-op job posting at an insurance company. I had no idea what an actuary was, but it sounded like it involved math, so I applied. I feel very fortunate to have found actuarial science in university. I really enjoyed the experience and I found the first probability-based exam to be too much fun. I had to keep going. I was hooked.

What led you to Actuarial modeling?
I've been drawn to coding ever since the first time I built a "Hello, World" program in high school. So after starting my career as an actuary I was naturally drawn to the actuarial modeling side of the business because I was able to solve problems and create efficient, well-controlled processes. For me, combining programming and math is the best of both worlds.

What's your background in AXIS?
I've been using AXIS for more than ten years in pricing, valuation, audit, and model development. I've been fortunate to work on a number of large AXIS projects, including transformations and acquisitions.

Why did you join Valani Global?
I had the pleasure of working with many of the Valani Global consultants individually and felt that I could contribute to their team. When I joined Valani, it was a great opportunity for me to apply my skills and help companies achieve their goals.

Why should clients hire Valani Global?
Clients should hire Valani Global because of our wide range of skillsets and our commitment to quality. Our team is experienced and has a deep knowledge of AXIS, Risk Integrity, IFRS 17 and Long Duration Targeted Improvements (LDTI). I'm confident in our team's ability to meet and exceed clients' expectations.

What skillset do you bring to the Valani team?
I believe my greatest skill set is my work ethic. I'm a problem solver and I'm committed to making sure goals are delivered.

How are you involved in the actuarial community?
In 2020, I volunteered on the Pandemic Modeling team with the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. We studied the coronavirus pandemic in Canada and released a paper with our projections. In addition to that, I volunteered as an exam writer, tester, grader, and proctor with the Society of Actuaries. Giving back is rewarding for me because I care about the future of our profession. I believe that continuous improvement and adaptation are needed to stay relevant in the changing world.
