How did you begin your journey into actuarial science?
I discovered the joy of problem-solving in grade eleven math class. I still remember my teacher's name, Miss Wilson but I did not know how to transfer that passion into a career. In my freshman year at University of Waterloo, while studying accounting, I also took a variety of math courses. It was those courses that introduced me to Actuarial Science. I had found what I really wanted to do.
What led you to Actuarial modeling?
After graduation, I worked in valuation and then moved into a pricing role. Then I took an actuarial modeling job working in an AXIS conversion project. I really enjoyed the process of building models because it gives me an opportunity to be more creative. It was very rewarding to see how the company was benefiting from the data and valuation system we built.
What's your background in AXIS?
I have used the AXIS for model transformation, model enhancement, and optimization, experience studies, valuation, and pricing work. I've also had some exposure to PolySystems and Prophet. From my experience, AXIS is one of the best tools to meet today's modeling challenges, and it is also super easy to use.
Why did you join Valani Global?
Nazir is well recognized in the industry. I heard numerous times about the work and the culture of the actuarial consulting practice he built. After my first meeting with the team, it was clear that Valani is a group of experts who support one another and create an environment where you can truly focus on meeting clients' needs. Joining the team was an easy decision.
Why should clients hire Valani Global?
Valani Global has extensive knowledge and success in providing AXIS and Risk Integrity modeling solutions from regulatory changes, actuarial transformation, and other financial reporting challenges. I'm really proud of my team. We go above and beyond to meet our client's needs.
What skillset do you bring to the Valani team?
I have well-rounded experience across different functions of insurance and reinsurance companies on various products. Working on regulatory changes and transformation projects had given me the opportunity to turn complex problems into simple, logical solutions that our clients can implement. My goal is to find a long-term solution to our client's needs, and I'm always looking for improvements.
How are you involved in the actuarial community?
I am always looking for opportunities to give back to the actuarial community. In 2017, I gave a talk on principle-based reserve modeling challenges at the Actuarial Society of New York, and in 2018, I co-authored an article on handing-off models from development to production. I'm excited to see what the future brings.
